Community Awareness Raising and Mobilizing
Raising awareness and mobilizing affected communities are essential to Arakan Oil Watch’s mission. Campaigns, workshops, and trainings are regularly held throughout the year to educate, update, and activate the community. Participants include community leaders, youth leaders, women’s groups, civil society organization members, and activists.
During the workshops, participants are educated on a variety of issues, including but not limited to:
• Current and upcoming oil and gas projects in the township and other areas
• Economic zone projects
• Company and government involvement in the projects
• Community rights
• Fisherfolk rights
• Farmer’s rights
• Company responsibility
• Future threats and impacts to livelihoods and the environment
Workshops conclude with discussion and strategizing of what actions may be taken to advocate for the protection and rights of the affected communities. The subsequent actions are often part of larger campaigns, which reach out to political parties, civil society groups, and other influential targets in order to create alliances across social sectors and advance AOW’s mission.
