The implementation of China’s oil and gas pipeline project in Kyauk Phyu Township of Burma’s western Arakan state has damaged local people’s rice farms and property since the beginning of the pipeline construction in Oct 2009. The oil and gas pipeline construction is scheduled to be completed in April 2013. While some villagers receive limited compensation, many villagers do not receive any compensation for damages and confiscated land. Arakan people are not benefiting from these local natural resources, and local people’s livelihoods and the environment are being negatively impacted by the project.
